Whole Wheat Brownies

Source: Mrs. Wallace MacFarlane from a newspaper clipping
Preparation Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 20 minutes Total: 30 minutes

Ingredients:
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine
4 eggs
1 1/3 cups whole wheat flour
2 squares (1 oz each) unsweetened chocolate, melted
1 cup chopped nuts
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon almond flavoring
1/2 teaspoon salt

Combine sugar, butter and eggs; mix until fluffy. Add melted chocolate. Combine whole wheat flour, salt and add alternately with milk. Blend well. Stir in nuts and flavoring and pour in to 9 x 13 x 2-inch greased baking pan and bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes or until done. Cool and top with chocolate icing, if desired.

Notes: I added powdered chocolate which is 2 tablespoons by the recipe, but I increased to 1/2 cup powdered cocoa. We also added chocolate chips. I baked it at 350 degrees instead of the 375 degrees.

I didn't even know whole wheat brownies were possible. But I really like the idea!
